Williams, (202) 225-7032 Tubbs Jones to Hold Press Conference on Campus Fire Safety Washington, D.C. - On Tuesday, April 17, 2007, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones along with a delegation of lawmakers will hold a press conference to discuss legislation introduced in the House that will improve fire safety in housing for universities and colleges. This legislation comes as a result of fire tragedies on campuses in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Tennessee. The legislation that will be discussed includes: *The College Fire and Prevention Act* would establish a demonstration incentive program within the Department of Education to promote installation of fire sprinkler systems, or other fire suppression or prevention technologies, in qualified student housing or dormitories, and for other purposes. The National Educational Association, The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, National Fire Sprinkler Association and the National Fire Protection Association have endorsed this legislation. This bill has twenty original co-sponsors. This legislation was originally introduced in the 107th Congress, and re-introduced in the 108th and 109th Congresses. *The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act* - This legislation erases the disparity between gifts made to colleges and universities for infrastructure improvements and gifts made to non-profit organizations for the benefit of similarly situated students. This allows tax deductible contributions to fraternities, sororities and other not-for-profit housing entities to be used for the same purposes that a college or university could use such contributions (except for physical fitness equipment). Attendees will include Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones as well as representatives from the North American Intrafraternity Conference, and the Panhellenic Council.
