BELCHERTOWN, Mass., October 24, 2011 – Legislation will be introduced by Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Representative Marcia Fudge (OH-11) to provide matching grants for the installation of fire safety equipment, including automatic fire sprinklers, fire alarm system and mass notification systems.  This legislation was first introduced in 2009 by the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones, a strong advocate for campus fire safety.

Through this grant program, 50% matching grants will be provided for the installation of these systems in residence halls and Greek housing.  According to the United States Fire Administration, there are approximately 3,800 university housing fires across the United States each year causing $9 million in property loss with 88% of them being caused by cooking.

“Automatic fire sprinklers are a proven way to save lives,” said Campus Firewatch Publisher Ed Comeau.  “We see it every day and providing this level of protection will unquestionably make a difference on our nation’s campuses.  When coupled with the early warning provided by fire alarm systems, fire safety in a residence hall will be dramatically improved.  I applaud Senator Brown and Representative Fudge for carrying on the legacy of Congresswoman Tubbs Jones and working to ensure the safety of our young people at colleges and universities.”

This legislation has the support of the following organizations:

  • Association of College and University Housing Officers International
  • Campus Firewatch
  • Congressional Fire Services Institute
  • International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters (national)
