Tip-a-Day 2011

Campus Firewatch is going to be doing its annual Campus Fire Safety Month Tip-a-Day campaign. Each weekday, during September, we'll be posting a fire safety tip on our Facebook page and Twitter feed and here on Campus Firewatch. You can send these tips out to your students each day as a reminder of how to be safe throughout the year.

New for this year! Within the Tweets, we will be linking to various campus fire safety videos clips that are available online.

Tip-a-Day 2011

This is the longer version of the Tip-a-Day. They will be condensed for the Twitter Feed. You can also download a PDF list of the tips along with links to the video clips.

• Always know 2 ways out, wherever you are. See Peter’s Story

• Smoke alarms save lives.  For the price of a pizza you can save a life, maybe yours. Get one today! Watch Dominic’s Story

• Live in housing with fire sprinklers. Sprinklers save lives. Watch a demonstration

• Cooking and drinking is as dangerous as driving while drinking. Learn more about cooking fire safety.

• Keep pizza boxes off the top of stoves or in them. More than 1 fire has started by a burner being turned on.  See Dana Christmas’s story of Seton Hall

• Smoke alarms can save your life only if they are working. Don’t take out batteries, don’t take them down. Learn about one survivor’s story

• When the alarm sounds, get out.  You never know when it’s real.  Learn more on how skin burns

• Most common killer in fires is smoke. Smoke spreads far from the fire, trapping and killing. Know what to do! Watch Cody’s Story

• Don’t overload your outlets or extension cords.  They can overheat and start a fire. It’s simple steps that can save your life

• Use stairs to get out, not elevators. Learn fire safety for students with disabilities

• Don’t run extension cords under carpets. They can become frayed & start a fire.  See how fast a fire can spread

• Use a lid to put out a grease fire. Water will spread the fire.  See what happens when you do.

• Cook your dinner, not the kitchen. Leading cause of house fires?  You guessed it…cooking.
